“Latinos accounted for half of the growth in the U.S. between 2000 and 2012” (Tennessean), but most people may not know that most of that growth came from U.S.-born Latinos, not immigrants.
The Nashville Hispanic Latinx community represents almost 10.5 percent of the total population (Census Bureau). Despite this growth, LatinX outreach and bridge-building have been challenging.
We, the members of HEART: Unifying Communities, have witnessed the interests and needs of members and change agents in the LatinX community about having more places, equity, and opportunities to express themselves and tell their stories.
The "Literature and Textile Art Workshop" from HEART U.C. is where Spanish creative writing, English as a second language, and textile art —as alternative means of expression— are linked. Our project could be the place where immigrant communities can describe their relocation experiences from their home countries and their adjustment to their new lives.
